This month, we’ll be exploring the Alamo Heights Neighborhood of San Antonio, Texas, located about five miles North of Downtown San Antonio.  Despite being surrounded by the 7th largest urban area in the nation, this high-end enclave functions as its own city with its own council, mayor and services like a Fire Department and EMS.
Alamo Heights began in the 1890’s and became a municipality in 1922.  Encompassing a total of 2.1 square miles, it has its own school district, the Alamo Heights School District, and is popular for its proximity to downtown and so much of the entertainment and enrichment San Antonio has to offer.  Alamo Heights calls itself the “friendliest city in Texas” and places an emphasis on community and history.
Alamo Heights is adjacent to cultural institutions including the Witte Museum, San Antonio Zoo, McNay Art Museum, San Antonio Japanese Tea Gardens and the San Antonio Botanical Garden.  Shopping includes the The Alamo Quarry Market shopping center, Quarry Village, Lincoln Heights Shopping Center, H-E-B’s Central Market, and North Star Mall. It’s also home to the Quarry Golf Club, ranked by Golf Digest as one of the top ten greatest American golf courses.  The club is known for its beauty, serenity and carefully designed courses.
