Craigslist is a great way to get rid of unneeded items and make a little cash, as well as to buy furniture and accessories for your apartment while not paying full retail. Apartment Therapy shows you the ropes of using Craigslist.
If you are buying items on Craigslist, check often as things can get pushed down in the list rather quickly. If you are looking for a specific item, a good rule of thumb is to look at least three times a day, (morning, midday and evening). Be sure to use the “Show Images” option in the top right-hand corner so you can see a thumbnail of what you are looking for.
What keywords you use to search for your desired item is also important. Try different combinations and synonyms for your desired item if what you want isn’t coming up. Don’t dismiss the free section, either. Often things can be found there that can be cleaned up and used or even turned for a profit.
If there are a lot of listings for the piece you are looking for, you may need to scour them to find the best example and the best price. A great way to track the options is by using a spreadsheet.
Keep a bookmark folder of Watched Items. Often an item won’t sell and you can email the seller a month later and they will be willing to accept a much lower offer.
