If you are renting a small apartment, you have probably felt the frustration of keeping your living space clutter free. With the advantages of convenience and cost-saving that apartment living provides, there can also be a shortage of extra storage and square footage. So, making sure everything has a place can be challenging. But a modest home doesn’t have to mean an untidy one, and we have compiled a list of helpful tips that can help you say ‘goodbye’ to the clutter, and ‘hello’ to an organized home.
First off, furniture that can double as a storage container, is at the top of our list. These types of items can include, but are not limited to:
- An ottoman
- An entertainment center that also works as a bookshelf
- A coffee table with storage (e.g. drawers, shelf or baskets underneath)
- A bed with drawers, or a headboard that has shelves
- A set of decorative shelves that second as a place for smaller items. Use those walls!
- A bench by the entrance that can also be used as shoe storage
Using these items can add style to your home, and will also provide new avenues for storage that allows you to make the best use of the space that you have. Remember, even if your apartment is small, having a few extra usable square feet can add up which will enable you to have less clutter mounting up over time.
Next up, identify problem areas and establish a routine! Give yourself 30 minutes every day to target the main areas of your home. Then, knock them off systematically; whether it’s wiping down the counters, emptying the dishwasher, making the bed, putting on a load of laundry, picking up items off the floor, or all of the above. Make it a habit to do a little each day so that it doesn’t add up!
A helpful time saving tip is to put things away right after you bring them home. It could be the mail,
groceries, or clean laundry. Whatever it may be, don’t make the mistake of saving it for later. Later
usually means never, and those items can easily stack up and end up cluttering your home.
Finally, don’t purchase and bring home things you don’t really need or have the space for. If you feel like something is necessary, but you don’t have room for it, get rid of–or donate–another item in its place.
